Don’t kick someone when they’re down
The Spanish equivalent of “kicking someone when they’re down” is the expression “hacer leña del árbol caído”, literally “making firewood out of a fallen tree”. It’s the exact opposite of what we believe in. When someone has suffered defeat, they shouldn’t be ignored. And far less attacked. We should help them, in so far as we’re able. And as the Spanish Republican poet Antonio Machado wrote, “That blighted elm tree… still shows us buds of green.” His poem speaks of rays of hope; we too look forward to “these miracles of spring”, when green shoots spring up, in those we provide assistance to.
Our girls in the photo, sitting on the fallen tree trunk (in Spanish “tronco”), greet you with another Spanish expression, “¿Qué pasa, tronco?”, which roughly translates as “What’s up, buddy?”. So… How are things? Why don’t you come round sometime and see us? We would love to have you visit our Home, the “Resi”! Help us plant seeds in the lives of these children. As Warren Buffet once said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Well, as you can see, this month, with spring in the air, we’ve opted for a… literary flair! (And I’m a poet, and didn’t know it!).
