Stereo?

With music, sounds from each side combine together harmoniously in our ears. Life also brings us stereo sound. But in this case, we hear good sounds mixed up with others which are discordant or harsh. Inevitably, we hear it all at the same time and from every side. It all gets heard, like it or not! Stereo sound is not about listening twice to the side that most interests us. It’s about listening carefully to everything but only paying heed to whatever is most objective and constructive.

We hear that lockdowns are very good, and also that they’re very bad. There are epidemiologist and negationists. Some prioritise health, others the economy. There are optimists and pessimists. Those who fight and those who have given up. Those who adapt and those who look away. Those who push on and those who dig their heels in. As for us, we are going to adapt to our reality, with hard work and optimism, with awkwardness and struggles, but living in community with support and solidarity. Students, whether stuck at home or attending in person, let’s make progress! We’re still on our feet, however tricky this obstacle race is. And we’re exercising patience, as we keep our ears pricked to distinguish the sounds and noises coming from all sides.
