Under construction
We will remember the school year now drawing to a close for the never-ending road works carried out in our street. It has been a tiresome year with heavy machinery, construction workers, noise, dust, mud, traffic restrictions and inconvenience. In addition, various new buildings under construction have added to the hubbub of concrete mixers, bulldozers and disk grinders on both sides of the street. When our children asked about the din, we jokingly replied that all those shouts from the workers were because they’d lost a coin or a contact lens and were digging everything up trying to find it.
Just like the work carried out on buildings and streets, the lives of our children are also under construction. They are projects which, if you only look at one day’s work, don’t seem to progress much. But as the weeks and months go by, we get to notice significant changes. We see how work gets completed and how the intentions in the plans materialise. The children are finishing this school year with many objectives fulfilled. And now they face new realities, new life-stages that are now set in motion.
They are lives under construction. With improvements and changes. Several of our oldest charges are now starting to get short periods of work experience, which will help them in various ways. Other, who are slightly younger, are finishing at primary school and will be going on to secondary education in September. One important change is that this month we say goodbye to our eleven-and-a-half year old Bolivian friend, who joined us at the beginning of the school year, good-natured and full of energy (he’s the one in the middle of the photo). We hope that everything that has been built into his life in the last year will serve him in good stead as he goes back to his home country. We will miss you a lot!
